DC Residence

Our clients have a wonderful house in the DC area, however the spatial flow required some improving. They desired to move the Kitchen up to the Main Floor (Level 2); add a guest suite to the walk-out Basement; and improve the Basement area to better support the adjacent Pool, and act as a ‘hang-out’ for the kids.

Organized Space

All Options:

  • Create a ‘Mudroom’ for the Basement entry, that has a semi-formal Entryway feel.

  • Convert the existing Basement Kitchen to a Kitchenette, helping to support the Pool area.

  • Provide a dining table in the Basement for informal meals, or games

  • Convert the existing Basement Bath + Storage into a Guest Suite with a new Bathroom also designed to support the Pool: Dressing space, and Water Closet, and Steam Shower.

Option A

The Stair between Level 1 and Level 2 is moved to improve the connection between the new Kitchen and backyard.

As you enter the house through the L2 Front Door, you would be drawn either left or right.  A threshold to the new Kitchen is created by using millwork for the Closets.  This allows for nice open circulation flow, but creates a formal separation between the Kitchen and Front Door.

Option B

A simpler renovation: keeps the existing Stairs, and requires little Structural modifciation.

The Powder and Front Hall Closet remain in the same general location

Showing the Kitchen with a loose connection to the Den, but these spaces could be totally open to each other
