Serve
The new 28,000 SF Veterans Affairs Clinic in Everette, WA was completed while with Roth Sheppard Architects, in 2022.
A challenge with all Civic projects is to meet very specialized programmatic needs, while still hitting tight budgets and delivering a building that is timeless and dignified. The VA facilities require all of the above, and have the additional element of honoring the hero’s the space needs to serve.

Form
This facility required a partial Second Story, which could create an odd looking mass (potential ‘Wedding Cake’ shape). The form had to be sculpted to rectify the mixed scale. A subtle shifted overlap, and a slight twist on the second level, not only balanced the look of the building, but became its Architectural strength.
Protect
The second level is twisted and pulled to the ground, shielding some of the more sensitive programs within: the Community Room is located on the corner of the Ground Level - giving it great views and natural light, but also exposure that can be disturbing to some Veterans. The solid form overlapping some of the glass hopefully gives the space a more protected feeling.
Fenestration
The building is primarily used for Physical Examinations, and Lab Work, so glazing is actually a detriment in many of the spaces. Strategically placing what little glass we needed - so the building wouldn’t look too bare, and the Offices and Meeting spaces would have adequate light, was essential to the buildings success.
